Stockport Schools' athletics team were in great form at the Greater Manchester schools' track and field championships at the Longford Park stadium in Trafford on Saturday.

Team members from Stockport Harriers competing at the championships were after qualifying standards to reach the English schools' championship finals at Gateshead next month.

Four of the middle distance squad struck gold and three qualified through to the finals.

Claire McMurdock was an easy winner in the inter girls 800m in 2 minutes, 15 seconds, three seconds inside the standard, with team-mate Ellie McLoughlin third in 2min 20 seconds.

In the inter boys Ben Styles outclassed a field that also included senior boys to win inside the 4:08 qualifying mark. He finished first in a solo run of 4:05 - Jacob Corrigan, also of Stockport, was second in 4:09.

London mini Marathon winner Lucy McLoughlin breezed into the finals in 4:45 in the junior girls 1500m race by over seven seconds, and Jessica Coulson finished fourth in 5:00. Leah Kay finished just behind in fifth place on 5:02 for the Harriers.

Andy Nixon came second in the inter boys 3k, Racheal Boothby was second in the inter girls 80m hurdles, and Samantha Riley second in the inter girls javelin with a throw of 24 metres.
