Harriers youngsters aiming for top rank

- 22nd Aug 2001

Two young starlets have recently been announcing themselves to Stockport athletic supporters.

The Dave Turnbull-coached duo of Ellie Mcloughlin and Rhea Fallows could find themselves in the top five UK under-13 ranking lists at the end of the year.

At the last Trafford open meeting, Mcloughlin clocked 2.23.6 for the 800m while Rhea Fallows produced an incredible five minutes flat time over 1500m.

More than 30 Stockport Harriers are travelling to Lausanne, Switzerland, in October for the annual marathon and half-marathons.

Kerry Wood, who managed 2hrs 49mins in this year's London Marathon, is hoping to give a good account of herself over the half-marathon course.

The cross-country season opens with the popular Uttoxeter races at Bramhall Park on Sunday, September 23. The closing date is September 15.

Stockport Harriers ladies road-running squad won the team prize at the Birchwood 10km event.

Samantha Thomas came 25th, Debbs McCann 27th and Liz Turton 29th. Mike Shaw was fifth overall with 33.02 in a field of more than 500 athletes and Len Best picked up the third vet spot in 35.51.

Len Mullen made his 10km debut in 52 minutes while training for next month's Great North Run.

Amanda Jane McCann picked up two gold medals in an open event in Sale.

The ten-year-old Stockport Harrier also set personal bests in winning the 70m in 11.9 seconds and the 150 metres in 23.5 seconds.
