Field left to trail Hussain

- 2nd Aug 2001

The Tame Valley Trail race finally took place having been delayed since May due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

The race takes in eight miles of undulating trails through the Tame Valley, starting at St Lawrence Church, Denton.

This year's race was won by national trail running champion Bashir Hussain of Stockport Harriers in 43 minutes 25 seconds, finishing just 21 seconds in front of Andrew Jones of East Cheshire.

Stockport Harriers also produced winners in the over-45 men's race - Russ Derbyshire in 48.18 - and in the over 50 men's race (Len Best in 48.26).

The women's section was won by Tricia Sloan of Salford in 51.38, who was chased home by Jackie Newton of Stockport in 52.18.

Further down the field there were noteworthy performances by a couple of new recruits to Stockport Harriers. Gill Warren finished in 71.05 and Carol Walton in 72.30.

Next Tuesday (August 7) sees the next 'First Tuesday' inter-club time trial at Woodbank Stadium.

All are welcome for a timed run, over either one mile at 7.25pm or 5km at 7.30pm. The races take place on the track and on Park Road. Entry is £1.40 for adults and 70p for children.
